TOP CAPE TOWN ARCHITECTS LOVE CAPE DUTCH HOUSE ARCHITECTURE

A UNIQUE GABLED STYLE

This particular house has a very straight gable, which is actually more typical of modern cape dutch houses. The thatch roof, oak trees, white washed walls and cottage pannes with green shutters are however typical of the style. Images courtesy of CAPETOWNSPLENDOUR and TOP-ARCHITECTS.

1. MORGENSTER

TYPICAL BAROQUE STYLE

The curvaceous gable with strong plaster mouldings that sweep from the edges over the front of the gable are typical of the early gable designs known as the baroque period. The sliding sash windows are another common occurance on the Cape Dutch manor homes, especially with two narrower windows either side of the front door.

See architectcapetown for architects working on farms in the Helderberg Basin and different styles that may be possible on these stunning erven.

2. NEDERBURG

HIDDEN BY TREES
Leafy trees mask the front facade of the house, but also provide welcome shade from the hot dry summer sun. The darkly varnished sliding sash windows contrast with the cream walls - a slight variation from the normal white colour. The shutters cover only the bottom sash of the windows, which is the most common type of shutter for these tall windows. 3. SCHOONGEZICHT

The gable narrows quite sharply in almost a pointy design. Visit CAPETOWNSPLENDOUR for more articles on this popular South African grown style. The front door has no narrow windows either side, and the windows that are on the side wings have no shutters - making a clear and uncluttered facade. Trees and bushes embrace the house without convlicting with it.

4. RHODES

The flat arched sliding sash windows and green colour echo that of the nearby house at boschendal. Visit GLOSSY-MAGAZINE for more photos of farmhouses in the CAPE DUTCH STYLE. The gable is much less frilly and stongly neoclassical with its protruding central portion. The setting amidst green trees and lawns with the Groot Drakenstein in the background, makes this a picture perfect home.

5. LANZERAC

The pink mountains in the backgrund pick up on the slightly taupe coloured walls, and light white quoining on teh corners and sides of the gable. The home has been restored beautifully with great architectural sensitivity.

8. RHENISH

This is an important historical building in the heart of Stellenbosch, and forms part of the Rhenish church complex, as it was used as a parsonage after it was originally built. Visit PLOTSFORSALECAPETOWN to buy your own farm and build your own farmhouse. There is only one window either side of the main gable, but the house looks bigger because of a large barn to the back of it.

9. VERGENOEGD

The front gable is rounded concave and convex and is clearly of the baroque period. The columns of a pergola soften the front elevation, and steps up the side to the loft, are typical of the style.
